11-year-old Rutherford boy charged with arson

A Rutherford boy has been charged with intentionally setting a fire that engulfed and destroyed a school playground on Tuesday, March 24.

The fire at the Lincoln Elementary School playground began at approximately 6:00 p.m. last Tuesday, according to authorities, with a lighter and some dry leaves. It quickly developed into a conflagration of plastic and rubber as the playground elements caught fire.

There were no injuries resulting from the blaze.

According to police, the boy has been charged with third-degree arson, and is currently in the custody of his parents.
