North Jersey shoppers boost local merchants during Small Business Saturday

North Jersey town reassess hospitals tax-exempt status after key ruling

Around North Jersey, more than $700 million worth of property goes untaxed because it is owned by non-profit hospitals. That includes hospital campuses on nearly 90 acres in Ridgewood, Hackensack, Teaneck, Englewood, Paterson and Wayne. And it also includes hospital-related properties, such as portions of medical office buildings in Wayne and Paramus, parking garages in Hackensack and an assortment of lots in Paterson.

Among the Bergen County contingent at Marlboro, an hour drive from Hackensack, was Jorge Benites, 59, a Marine Corps veteran who says he has struggled with depression since the recent deaths of his mother and stepson. He couldn’t continue working as a tour bus driver — and, as a result, he could no longer afford his $1,500 monthly rent for his Hackensack apartment. The Bergen County Division of Veterans Services helped him find an apartment in Wood-Ridge for a fraction of the cost, he said.
