Federal shutdown effects felt across New Jersey

The impasse shuttered a number of federally-funded services throughout North Jersey, including programs to cleanup Superfund sites. Excavation of contaminated soil and concrete at the E.C. Electroplating site in Garfield is on hold until the government shutdown ends, said Rich Puvogel of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The neighborhood around the plant became a federal Superfund site in 2011.
