An East Rutherford police sergeant leading a funeral procession in Carlstadt was injured Saturday morning when a sport-utility vehicle collided with his motorcycle, according to police.

The officer, Stanley Rymarz, 39, was thrown from his motorcycle, knocked unconscious, and suffered a broken ankle and shoulder injury, police said.

The incident occurred as the funeral procession was heading northbound on Hackensack Street. According to police, the SUV, a 1993 Jeep driven by Raymont Ippolito of Carlstadt, 39, was traveling on Broad Street.

Rymarz, who is married with two young children, has been with the East Rutherford Police Department since 1998 and was promoted to sergeant last year. He is expected to be released from the hospital this weekend, police said.
