As a soft dribble of rain sent a chill through the hikers and bikers hustling their way through the Palisades Interstate Park in Alpine on Saturday afternoon, another group of visitors was sipping hot cider in front of a fireplace in the historic Kearney House and learning how cozy life in the 1800s could be.

Palisades Interstate Parkway police recovered the body of 35-year-old John Norton of Palisades Park near State Line Lookout in Alpine on Sunday. Norton resigned as vice principal of the Elizabeth Avenue School in Franklin in late 2013.

The nine explorers – families from Englewood, Oradell and Jersey City – were on a scavenger hunt put on by the commission that runs the park. They looked for acorns, a spider on a spider web, poison ivy and poop, their cameras poised for elusive creatures and fungi.
